The ITIL 4 Foundation Exam

Passing the ITIL 4 Foundation exam is the first step in the new ITIL 4 Certification Scheme and might be trivial to some but can be quite challenging for others. Depending on one’s background it can be a bit more difficult than anticipated, but this article (including our quiz) is here to help you prepare.

Here is what you need to know:

The exam comprise of 40 multiple choice questions
26 correct answers are required (65% passing score)
There is only one correct answer for each question
You get 60 minutes (and an additional 15 mn for non-native English speakers)
Question types include standard, list, missing word and negative

What is ITIL 4?

ITIL 4 is the latest release of the globally acknowledged IT Infrastructure Library framework. It provides guidance to businesses and individuals on how to use modern IT Service Management practices combined with an Agile mindset to meet ever-changing business needs and deliver value to its users. ITIL is supported by a comprehensive certification scheme, which spans knowledge from the principles to how the entire framework fits together.

What are the prerequisites for the ITIL 4 Foundation exam?

There are none.
However, it is strongly recommended to attend an official course or e-learning.

How close are the ITIL 4 Foundation practice questions to the actual exam questions?

Both the actual and the practice test questions have been taken from a big pool of questions. So, yes, it can happen, that you see the exact same or very similar questions during the official ITIL 4 Foundation exam.

How many times can I try the ITIL 4 Foundation quiz?

As often as you like, there is no limitation.
Please note that the ITIL 4 Foundation quiz contains 20 questions. For the full practice test, please provide your e-mail address and download the PDF file.

When is my result good enough to try the actual test?

To pass the official ITIL 4 Foundation exam, you need to have 26 correct answers out of 40 questions.
Nevertheless, we suggest to aim for a better score on the practice test, somewhere around 80%-90%, as the actual exam questions might be a bit harder.

How much time do I have for the ITIL 4 Foundation exam?

For the ITIL 4 Foundation exam, you have 1 hour by default but you get 25% extra time if English is not your native language.

For the practice quiz on our page, there is no time limit, nevertheless, you should finish in max. 37,5 minutes to simulate the available time during the actual exam.

Native English speakers get roughly 90 seconds per question while non-native English speakers get roughly 110 seconds.

What are the requirements to take the ITIL 4 Foundation practice test?

There are no prerequisites for taking the ITIL 4 Foundation mock exam, however, it is suggested to attend the official course or prepare in some other way.

Hi Alexander

I just wanted to give you and others some feedback on my ITIL 4 Foundation exam experience, well not much on the exam, because of the non disclosure agreement, but I wanted to give feedback on my learnings.
I did the course through Foster and Melliar here in South Africa, they also supplied the course material and quick reference cards, a shortened condensed version of the course, but after completing the course in May, I left it for a while and concentrated on my IT work, not really finding the time to study for the exam, then we were given a deadline of 31 October this year, and I started going through that condensed version, but by then I’d forgotten half of the training.
So I started searching the internet, and it wasn’t long before that I came across Value Insights web site, I was continuously looking for practice exam material and also used online material from other websites, but I must say, This website logged my ip from my work and home pcs most of the time, I went through each and every video, naughty naughty, I was making notes from the video’s for myself, but they were presented so well, then I could also download the 40 question ITIL 4 exam quiz, also very well, and professionally presented, and that for free, I’d have expected to pay for this material, thank you so much Value Insights, and your team, for all the support, I mostly used the questions from your site and Knowlegehut, to study for my exam, both sites questions aligned closely with the way in which the actual exam questions are posed, though, personally, I think Knowledgehuts questions aligned closer, but Value Insights material was the most Valuable to me, it offered the most value for free material. Thank you and a Big shout out to your support team, I wrote last night and passed with 80 %…..

  Regarding the tips, I usually tell people this:
  – The questions always expect answers that represent the “ITIL” way of things and not how one might answer based on real-life experiences. The ITIL exam is all about the ideal world.
  – Always watch out for absolute answers, which contain stuff like “must” or “always” or “never”. Those are usually not the right ones.
  – Look out for “NOTs” in questions, like “What is NOT the best definition of …” Those alter the answer.
  – Do a quick run of the 40 questions you get and answer the ones that are easy. Then do a second run where you answer the harder ones, which need more thinking.
  – Make sure that always only one answer is selected for each question.
  – If time runs out and you still have unanswered questions, just select any of the answers. You have a 25% to get it right, which is more than when you don’t answer it.

  The ones in the free mock exam file can be found in the PDF file after the questions.
  The ones in the paid mock exam files can be found after the questions and in the Excel file, which is attached to the PDF.
